The hotel was named after the famous Samaria Gorge, which is the longest ravine in Europe and has been a national park since 1962. Starting from Xyloskalo, 44 km south of Chania, a well-trodden trail leads down a tortuous 18 km course to the seaside village of Agia Roumeli. The walk takes from 5-7 hours.
